The series 'The House of Spirits' is set to debut on April 29, 2026, on Prime Video, marking the first Spanish-language television adaptation of Isabel Allende's renowned 1982 novel. This announcement was made during the 76th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival, commonly known as Berlinale. The series will be available in 240 countries, showcasing the global reach of streaming platforms and their role in promoting diverse narratives.
The production, created by FilmNation and Fábula, is a family saga comprising eight episodes, each running approximately 45 minutes. The narrative focuses on three generations of women—Clara, Blanca, and Alba—living in a conservative South American country, which is shaped by class struggles, political unrest, and elements of magic. This context highlights the cultural and social themes that Allende's work often explores, making it relevant in both historical and contemporary discussions regarding gender and class in Latin America.
Francisca Alegría and Fernanda Urrejola penned the script, with Alegría and Andrés Wood directing the series. The first three episodes were showcased at the Berlinale Film Festival, reinforcing the festival's importance as a platform for premiering significant cinematic works. This adaptation not only honors the legacy of Allende's novel but also aims to engage a broader audience by bringing a classic literary work to the screen through a modern lens.
