Senate approves the issuance of three commemorative coins for the 2026 World Cup

The Mexican Senate has unanimously approved the creation of three commemorative coins to celebrate the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico will co-host.

The full Senate of Mexico has unanimously approved a decree allowing the Bank of Mexico to issue three commemorative coins in honor of the FIFA World Cup 2026. With the support of all 94 senators present from various political factions, this move emphasizes not only the significance of the event but also Mexico's historical role as a World Cup host country.

Senator Homero Davis from the Morena party, who chairs the Senate Finance Committee, highlighted that the coins symbolize the intertwining of history, national identity, international projection, and institutional responsibility. Davis stressed that hosting the World Cup presents a unique opportunity for Mexico to showcase its culture, hospitality, and organizational abilities on a global stage, especially since it will be the first time the country hosts the World Cup since 1986.

The planned coins will be minted by the Bank of Mexico, featuring a gold coin valued at 25 pesos and a silver coin with a yet-to-be-named value, among others. This initiative is part of Mexico's broader strategy to leverage the international attention from the World Cup to promote national pride and cultural heritage. The approval of these coins is expected to attract collectors and raise awareness about the event.
