22-Meter 'Huachitúnel' Discovered in Tepetitlán, Hidalgo; Hidden Passage Connected to Pipelines

Authorities have uncovered a 22-meter underground tunnel in Tepetitlán, Hidalgo, believed to be used for the illegal extraction of hydrocarbons.

State and federal authorities have secured a property in Tepetitlán after discovering a subterranean tunnel allegedly used for the illegal extraction of hydrocarbons. The operation, led by the Attorney General's Office of the State of Hidalgo (PGJEH), took place in the community of Sayula, where investigative agents, supported by federal forces, executed a search warrant.

At the site, investigators found a structure that appeared to be a septic tank, which concealed access to the underground passage. Initial reports indicate that the tunnel stretched approximately 22 meters and contained two connections that linked directly with a fuel pipeline. This discovery highlights the ongoing problem of illegal hydrocarbon extraction activities in the region, raising concerns about the environmental and economic impacts of such operations.

Additionally, authorities reported finding suspected illegal substances during the operation. The property is now under the custody of the ministerial authorities, who will continue the necessary investigations to determine accountability. This incident underscores the coordinated efforts between state and federal agencies to combat hydrocarbon theft and to enhance regulation and enforcement regarding illegal fuel extraction practices in Mexico.
