Ivica Granić: The Song about the Poglavnik is a Crime, Alright, But Who Writes the Rules of Hatred in Croatia?

The Croatian politician Josip Dabro faced backlash for singing a controversial song with improvised lyrics that reference Ante Pavelić at a public event, sparking accusations of promoting hate and violence.

Josip Dabro, a member of the Croatian Parliament and former Minister of Agriculture, was filmed at a carnival event in Komletinci singing the song 'When Stjepan Radić Was Dying,' which discusses the assassination of Croatian politician Stjepan Radić in 1928. Although the song itself is not controversial, Dabro added improvised lines that alluded to Ante Pavelić, the leader of the Ustaša regime during World War II, saying 'A golden tomb in Madrid, where lies the leader of all Croats.' This addition has raised eyebrows, particularly among those sensitive to the legacy of Ustaša symbols in Croatia.
