STF gives 30 days for the Union to resolve the impasse between indigenous people and riverside residents in southern Roraima

The Supreme Court of Brazil has mandated a 30-day deadline for the federal government to mediate a longstanding conflict between the Waimiri Atroari indigenous community and riverside inhabitants in Roraima.

The Brazilian Supreme Court, led by Minister Flávio Dino, has set a 30-day deadline for the federal government to find a resolution to a decade-long dispute between the Waimiri Atroari indigenous community and riverside dwellers in the Lower Rio Branco region of Roraima. This decision was made with the aim of ensuring free navigation for people and goods along the Jauaperi and Macucuaú rivers, which have been affected by the ongoing conflict.

Furthermore, the ruling mandates that the federal government, through the Attorney General's Office (AGU) and the National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples (Funai), complete the Circumstantial Report of Identification and Delimitation (RCID). This official study is crucial as it delineates the boundaries of the indigenous territory, which is essential for resolving disputes and ensuring the rights of the indigenous population are respected.

As this matter progresses, G1 has reached out to the AGU, Funai, and the Waimiri Atroari Community Association (ACWA) for comments and is currently awaiting their responses. The government of Roraima has expressed its belief that the issue can be resolved amicably, highlighting the importance of collaboration between the communities involved for a sustainable solution to the conflict.
