The Simonésia Carnival brought together approximately 15,000 attendees, surpassing initial estimates, and is celebrated for its cultural significance in the region.
The Simonésia Carnival has successfully attracted around 15,000 participants this year, significantly exceeding the initial estimate of 10,000 attendees. The annual event, which has been a staple in the community for over 30 years, is recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of the municipality and is currently seeking recognition at the state level. This year’s festivities brought tourists from various cities in Minas Gerais, highlighting its appeal and importance in the regional cultural landscape.
The carnival included a lively parade by the samba school Voz do Morro, which has been a part of the local carnival scene for 27 years. In addition to the samba parade, attendees enjoyed performances by the popular duo Os Barões da Pisadinha among other attractions, such as street blocks and electric trio presentations, which kept the celebrations going into the early morning hours. This vibrant event serves not only as entertainment but also as a vital component of local identity and heritage.
Mayor Marinalva Ferreira emphasized the cultural significance of the carnival, noting that the municipality has officially recognized it as an immaterial heritage through a municipal decree. This acknowledgment underscores the importance of such events in preserving local traditions and fostering community pride, while also potentially boosting tourism and economic activity in Simonésia. As the event continues to grow, it might attract even broader interest and investment in the future.
