FCT not created for elite alone, says ex-presidential candidate
Former presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo emphasizes that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) should be accessible to all residents, not just the elite, as he rallies support for equitable governance ahead of upcoming elections.
Adewole Adebayo, a former presidential candidate from the Social Democratic Party, addressed a campaign rally in Gwagwalada, highlighting the need for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to serve all its residents rather than only the affluent. He noted that the upcoming Area Council election presents an important opportunity for citizens to voice their demand for accountable and inclusive governance. Adebayo encouraged local residents to leverage their voting power to ensure leadership that prioritizes the welfare of all communities in the FCT.
Adebayo discussed the historical context of the FCT, established in 1976 under the military regime of Murtala Muhammed. Designed to be a neutral ground symbolizing national unity, the territory was supposed to provide equal access to services and opportunities. However, Adebayo pointed out the persistent disparities that have developed over the years, contrasting affluent neighborhoods like Asokoro and Maitama with underdeveloped areas such as Gwagwalada, Kuje, and Bwari, which continue to struggle with inadequate infrastructure and essential services.
He urged the residents to take action in the upcoming election to redefine the leadership landscape at the grassroots level. Adebayoβs message underscores a growing sentiment among many Nigerians who are increasingly frustrated with the uneven development within their capital city. The call for equitable treatment and development across all sectors of the FCT is seen as a vital step towards building a more inclusive society, reflecting the voices of the marginalized in national discourse.
