The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced a new initiative to award bus operating companies that excel in providing accessibility for Persons with Disabilities (PWD). This initiative reflects a concerted effort to improve public transport systems in Lagos State, ensuring that bus operators prioritize inclusivity. The announcement came during a joint meeting with the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs, where both organizations explored ways to enhance inclusion through various strategies.

LAMATA's Managing Director, Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, praised the advocacy efforts of the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), acknowledging their role in promoting disability inclusion. During the visit, LASODA’s General Manager, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, highlighted critical aspects such as the necessity of priority seating and the inclusion of sign language video translations in public transport announcements. These measures are vital for accommodating PWD and ensuring they can navigate the public transport system with confidence and ease.

The introduction of this award is part of LAMATA’s broader strategy to encourage more bus operators to enhance their services, making them more user-friendly and accessible for all residents of Lagos State.
