Dentist forgets drill in patient's mouth and will have to pay indemnity after complications in SC
A dentist in Florianópolis, Brazil, has been ordered to pay R$ 12,775 in compensation to a patient after a dental drill was accidentally left in her mouth during a procedure, leading to health complications.
In a case decided by the 5th Civil Chamber of the Santa Catarina Court of Justice, a dentist from Florianópolis has been mandated to compensate a patient R$ 12,775 following an incident where a dental drill was forgotten in her mouth during a dental procedure. The patient, who underwent a tooth extraction, subsequently experienced severe pain and complications after the drill migrated to her nasal region, exacerbated by her preexisting diabetes. While the initial compensation claim was set at R$ 20,000, the court reduced it, specifying that R$ 2,775 would be allotted for material damages and R$ 10,000 for moral damages, with interest and adjustment for inflation also applicable.
