Police Reminds - it is prohibited to go on the ice to the wreck of the ship in Mangaļsalā
The Latvian police have warned the public against walking on ice near the wreck of the Lady Kathleen due to unsafe conditions, citing incidents of individuals falling through the ice.
The Latvian police have issued a warning regarding the dangers of walking on the ice leading to the wreck of the ship 'Lady Kathleen' near Mangaļsalā. The ice conditions in the sea are hazardous, characterized by layers of snow, slush, and loose pieces of ice. This warning comes after several individuals have ventured onto the ice in recent days, eager to take photographs near the wreck site, which is approximately 100 meters from the shore. The Lady Kathleen ran aground during a storm in 1951, and only remnants of the vessel remain visible today.
Recently, reports have surfaced on social media about two individuals who fell through the ice near the wreck over the weekend. Although the police were made aware of one incident, the rescue operation was canceled when it was confirmed that the individual had already been saved. Eyewitness accounts captured on video show a man struggling to stay above the ice while a woman attempts to assist him by removing her coat to throw it to him. In the midst of this, another man arrives with a sled, and a younger individual also comes to help.
Jānis Skrims, a representative from the Riga City Municipal Police’s Water Safety Management, emphasized that the ice thickness in the sea is very uneven, stating, "Of course, there are places where the ice thickness can be up to 40 centimeters. But there are areas where, unfortunately, it is much less, making it dangerous for anyone to step onto the ice." This serves as a critical reminder for the public to exercise caution during winter activities near potentially dangerous bodies of water like the one surrounding the wreck site.
