Swedish Intelligence: Russia Increases Hybrid Threats Near Sweden

Swedish military intelligence warns of increased hybrid threats from Russia, indicating a potential expansion of risk in the region.

According to Swedish military intelligence, Russia has enhanced its hybrid threat activities near Sweden and appears willing to assume greater risks in the region. The head of the Military Intelligence and Security Service, Tomass Nilsons, reported to AFP that Russia has intensified operations and increased its presence surrounding Sweden. He expressed concern that Moscow would continue these activities independent of the outcomes of its aims in Ukraine.

Nilsons did not specify particular attacks but highlighted in the annual threat report from MUST that Russia has developed a wide array of methods applicable within the framework of hybrid warfare. This includes spreading disinformation, conducting cyberattacks, implementing economic sanctions, conducting intelligence operations, and interfering in elections. Such a range of tactics points to a sophisticated strategy aimed at undermining Swedish security and sovereignty.

The warning about a possible increase in desperation due to Russia's failure to achieve its objectives in Ukraine raises concerns. Nilsons indicated that as Russia strives to realize its goals, there is a risk of increased aggression or erratic behavior, which could have significant implications for both Sweden and broader regional stability.
