Legal Center: 560 Administrative Detention Cases Amid Israeli Escalation Against Palestinians

A legal center warns of a significant rise in administrative detentions of Palestinians in Israel amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

The Arabic legal center "Adalah" in Israel has raised alarms regarding a troubling increase in the Israeli government's use of administrative detention against Palestinian individuals, revealing that there are currently 560 such cases in East Jerusalem and the 1948 territories. This surge is particularly evident following the outbreak of the conflict in Gaza in October 2023. The center attributes its findings to official data obtained through a freedom of information request submitted to the Israeli Ministry of Justice.

According to the report, from 2020 to May 2025, hundreds of administrative detention cases have been opened against Palestinian citizens in Israeli central courts. The center notes that all appeals to the Supreme Court regarding these detentions have been rejected, raising concerns about an alarming expansion of this practice within Israel's Green Line, which encompasses the 1948 territories. The situation indicates a significant shift in the legal landscape, where administrative detention has become an increasingly utilized tool against Palestinians.

Official Israeli estimates suggest that Arab citizens make up more than 20% of Israel's population of over 10 million people. The sharp increase in administrative detention cases highlights serious implications for civil rights, as it indicates a systemic approach to suppress dissent and maintain control during a period of heightened tensions. The findings from the Adalah legal center underscore the need for increased scrutiny and advocacy on issues of human rights and due process in the context of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
