Woman tricked into car - two men sentenced for aggravated rape
Two men have been sentenced for the aggravated rape of a woman who was misled into their car in Gothenburg, Sweden.
In June 2025, a woman, who was heavily intoxicated, was lured into what she believed was a taxi near Stora Teatern in Gothenburg. Instead of taking her home, the driver and another man took her to a secluded area in Näset, significantly reducing her chances of escaping. Faced with an imposed choice, she was coerced into sexual acts against her will; the court confirmed that her participation was not voluntary, as it was made under the threat of violence or worse.
The court classified the assault as aggravated rape since it involved multiple perpetrators acting in concert, occurred in a remote location, and under circumstances that were particularly threatening and humiliating for the victim. One of the men was sentenced in December 2025 to five years in prison, while the other received a sentence of five years and six months in February, a sentence that included charges of gross negligence in traffic. The men have been ordered to collectively pay 370,000 kronor in damages to the victim, but both have denied the charges.
This case highlights significant issues related to consent and safety for women in vulnerable situations, particularly regarding how intoxication can impact a person's ability to give consent. It raises broader questions about public safety in urban areas and the necessity for measures to protect individuals who might find themselves in risky situations, such as relying on taxi services late at night.
