Record Carnival: 3 million tourists traveled and spending exceeded one trillion pesos

Argentina's Carnival saw a record 3 million tourists this year, with spending surpassing one trillion pesos.

Over the recent Carnival holiday, Argentina experienced its highest-ever internal tourism numbers, with approximately 3 million tourists traveling, representing a 7.2% increase over the same holiday weekend last year. The Confederation of Argentine Medium Enterprises (CAME) reported that direct economic impact from this influx of tourists reached over one trillion pesos, which includes expenditures on food, beverages, accommodation, transportation, recreation, and shopping. This significant spike in tourism underscores the region's vibrant and diverse travel experiences across the country.

CAME noted that the four-day Carnival weekend was marked by intense activity in various locations, including cities that typically do not attract large numbers of tourists. Many of these locales benefited from unique carnival-themed events and activities designed to draw visitors, thus expanding the tourism reach beyond the traditional hotspots. Economic spending, adjusted for inflation, demonstrated a consistent growth rate of 6% compared to the previous year, indicating a robust economic recovery during this festive period.

While the average daily spending per tourist showed a real decrease of 7.7%, at 111,605 pesos, the average length of stay increased slightly to three days compared to an average of 2.8 days in 2025. The 2023 Carnival not only highlights the growing trend of domestic travel in Argentina but also reflects an evolving tourism market adapting to new challenges and preferences among travelers, paving the way for future opportunities in the sector.
