Solar parks set a production record this year. Electricity prices will sharply rise again on Wednesday

Solar energy production in Estonia reached record levels while electricity prices are set to rise significantly.

On Tuesday, electricity prices in Estonia averaged €103.45 per megawatt-hour, but are expected to increase by 35% to €139.59 on Wednesday. The sunny weather has provided a temporary alleviation in prices, with solar parks generating over 200 megawatts at peak times, causing a brief drop in electricity prices to between €100-€110 per megawatt-hour. This marks the highest production level for solar energy seen so far this year.

Tiit Hõbejõgi, the acting head of Enefit's energy trading division, noted that while solar energy production helped to reduce prices during peak times, the most significant price influences were from strong wind energy production in Lithuania and Finland. Data from Elering Live indicated that Estonia's solar energy production reached around 200 megawatts at midday, which did lower daytime prices momentarily, but these reductions were limited to certain hours.

Hõbejõgi also emphasized that as the days become longer and sunnier, the influence of solar energy on prices will continue to grow. He pointed out that in some years, the impact of solar energy on prices has already been substantial by March, suggesting a broader trend in how weather patterns and energy production dynamics could shape market prices, especially as the region moves towards more sustainable energy sources.
