Don't fall for this mistake in bed - it's a health risk: "Bacteria and even mold"
Failing to wash pillows and bedding regularly can lead to the accumulation of health-threatening bacteria, dust mites, and even mold, according to experts.
Timo Oksanen, the store manager of Jysk Varisto, emphasizes the importance of washing pillows at least twice a year and blankets at least once a year to reduce moisture, dust mites, and bacteria that can cause allergies and skin problems. Dirty pillows pose a health risk, especially since people spend a significant amount of time in close contact with them while sleeping. Health expert Päivi Vainio further stresses that frequency of washing should be increased for allergy sufferers, who may need to wash their bedding up to five times a year.
The article highlights a common issue many Finnish people might face: sleeping on unwashed pillows and blankets harboring germs and allergens. Oksanen provides guidelines for maintaining hygiene in sleeping environments, suggesting that pillows should ideally be replaced every two years and blankets every 5-10 years. The accumulation of sweat, skin oils, dust, and allergens in unwashed bedding can negatively impact health, which is compounded by the long periods spent asleep in direct contact with these items.
The findings serve as a reminder for residents to prioritize their sleeping environments by following recommended cleaning practices to ensure a healthy and comfortable night’s sleep. By increasing awareness and adherence to these hygiene practices, one can significantly minimize the risk of allergies and other health problems associated with unclean pillows and blankets. This advice encourages proactive behaviors towards personal health and well-being.
