All 25 births last year occurred as a result of state-funded medical fertilization

Last year, over 11,000 births occurred in Latvia, with 451 resulting from state-funded medical fertilization procedures.

In 2025, Latvia recorded more than 11,000 births, among which 451 were attributed to state-funded medical fertilization procedures. Previously, women were allowed two attempts at state-funded fertilization, but due to additional funding this year, the number of attempts available has increased to three if pregnancy does not occur after the first two. This raises the potential for more women to receive assistance in conceiving, reflecting a commitment by the government to support families looking to grow.

The National Health Service reported that positive results from medical fertilization procedures are observed in approximately half of the cases. This year, a budget of 4 million euros has been allocated for this service, which includes an additional 1.5 million euros aimed at expanding the availability of these procedures. The increase in funding has significantly improved access to these services, allowing women to benefit from medical assistance without facing long waiting times, similar to the situation in the previous year.

Moreover, the enhanced funding is expected to enable the provision of more than 1,800 state-funded fertilization procedures in the current year. Such initiatives underscore the Latvian government’s focus on family planning and affordability of medical support for those experiencing challenges with conception. This approach not only aims to enhance individual family dynamics but also to contribute to the overall demographic health of the nation by encouraging growth in birth rates through accessible healthcare solutions.
