Nisse on Småskär about the new cell tower: "A security issue"
The construction of a 45-meter-high community cell tower in Luleå's archipelago progresses as Telia plans to establish operations there, improving mobile coverage after two and a half years of effort by local advocates.
In the autumn of 2023, a 45-meter-high community cell tower was erected on Storbrändön in Luleå's archipelago as part of the 'Full Coverage' project, which includes contributions from Luleå Technical University and Luleå Municipality. Although progress had been slow since its construction, the situation changed recently when Telia announced plans to set up operations at the tower, owned by Telia Towers. This development marks a significant step towards enhancing mobile coverage in the region.
Nils Sundberg, who has a long-standing connection to Småskär through his family cabin, has been a dedicated advocate for better mobile coverage in Luleå's archipelago. He represents the Luleå Archipelago Association and highlights that many stakeholders, a total of 34 including both private and public entities, have been working towards this goal. The efforts are finally nearing fruition, with the tower expected to be operational soon after a lengthy waiting period of two and a half years.
According to Telia, the planning phase covers various aspects, including permit processes, dialogues with Luleå Municipality, and preparations for the installation of 4G and 5G antennas before the facility becomes operational. The goal is to enhance the region's mobile network, with community members eager to see the project realized after years of advocacy and effort.
