Police create 'security corridor' for vans and minibuses to prevent robberies
The Rio de Janeiro Military Police established a security corridor to protect vans and minibuses transporting carnivalgoers to the Sambadrome from potential robberies and criminal activities.
The Military Police of Rio de Janeiro has implemented a security corridor aimed at safeguarding travelers using vans and minibuses to the Sambadrome during the carnival festivities. This measure comes in response to rising concerns over the safety of passengers, who have been targeted by criminals during transit. The initiative involves pre-established routes that these vehicles must follow to ensure their safety and to prevent them from inadvertently entering high-risk areas.
The need for this security corridor was underscored by a recent incident in which a van carrying twenty passengers was robbed after deviating from the designated route. The driver ventured into a forbidden area while attempting to evade a police checkpoint and consequently encountered armed assailants. That incident highlighted the risks posed to unsuspecting passengers who might not be aware of the danger zones surrounding the carnival's vibrant activities.
The Secretary of the Military Police, Marcelo de Menezes, noted that the security plan encompasses around 800 vehicles, transporting approximately 40,000 people throughout the carnival season. This measure not only aims to protect those attending the festivities but also underscores the city's ongoing battle against urban crime, as it seeks to create a safer environment for both locals and visitors during one of Brazil's most significant cultural events.
