The key works of the Gelman collection of Mexican art will return to their homeland for the first time in 20 years

Significant pieces from the Gelman collection of Mexican art will be on display in Mexico for the first time in two decades.

Mexico is set to welcome back a significant number of modern art pieces for a limited time, marking the first exhibition of the Gelman Santander Collection in 20 years. From February 17 to May, 68 artworks will be showcased at the Museum of Modern Art, which feature renowned artists such as Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Rufino Tamayo. This exhibition, entitled 'Relatos modernos. Obras emblemáticas de la Colección Gelman Santander', promises to attract considerable attention from art lovers and the general public alike.

The return of these works is particularly notable, as they have not been seen in Mexico for two decades. The collection includes iconic pieces such as Rivera's 'Vendedora de alcatraces' (1943), and this exhibition is part of an international tour intended to promote the significance of Mexican modern art. By exhibiting these key works, the Secretaria de Cultura aims to foster a deeper connection between the artworks and their cultural origins, allowing local audiences to once again engage with their artistic heritage.

With the showcasing of these landmark pieces, this exhibition underscores the rich artistic legacy of Mexico and highlights the contributions of its most celebrated artists. It serves not only as a cultural revival for the community but also as an opportunity for international visitors to experience the vibrancy of Mexican modern art first-hand, thereby reinforcing its global artistic significance.
