Punjab's Anti-Drug Mega Events Have Become a New Tool for Political Power Play

Political parties in Punjab are utilizing anti-drug campaigns as a platform for political gain, with allegations being exchanged among them.

In Punjab, all political parties claim to be against drug use and are engaged in various forms of drug de-addiction initiatives. However, the competition to project the best efforts is causing discord, with parties trying to undermine one another's contributions. This issue was prominently displayed during Governor Gulab Chand Khataria's 'War Against Drug Addiction' campaign and during a recent program held in Moga by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, where political motives were an undercurrent.

Recently, an anti-drug program organized by the state government in a village featured leaders such as Aam Aadmi Party's Arvind Kejriwal, Punjab's DGP Gaurav Yadav, and Chief Secretary K.A.P. Sinha speaking to the public. This event sparked controversy as opposition parties questioned whether it was a governmental initiative or merely a political rally for the Aam Aadmi Party. This ongoing rivalry over drug de-addiction has diminished the focus on the actual problem, as political gain overshadows genuine efforts to combat drug abuse.

Amidst these tensions, Arvind Kejriwal has accused opposition parties like the Shiromani Akali Dal, BJP, and Congress of contributing to Punjab's drug crisis. He has cautioned voters about the potential political repercussions of supporting these parties, suggesting that they have failed the state in effectively addressing drug addiction. This politicization of the anti-drug campaigns is further complicating the issue, as it engenders a culture of blame rather than a united approach towards solving the drug addiction problem in Punjab.
