Exports dominate Nigeria’s gas market in 2025 –Report

Nigeria's gas production in 2025 reached 2.71 trillion standard cubic feet, with approximately 35% being exported according to regulatory data.

In 2025, Nigeria's gas production hit a remarkable 2.71 trillion standard cubic feet (scf), which is an increase from the previous year's output of 2.5 trillion scf. The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission reported that about 942.7 billion scf, or 34.8%, of this production was earmarked for export, emphasizing Nigeria's growing role in the global gas market. This increase in production not only bolsters Nigeria’s economy but also highlights the country’s potential in meeting international energy demands.

Domestically, the gas sector saw significant activity with sales reaching 780.6 billion scf and approximately 776.6 billion scf utilized for field operations. The domestic gas market continues to grow; however, the trend towards exporting a substantial portion of production indicates a shift in focus towards global markets. The overall utilization rate for gas in 2025 was noted at a high of 92.4%, showcasing effective operational efficiency across the sector.

The data also revealed a balanced contribution from both associated and non-associated gas, with the former accounting for 1.456 trillion scf and the latter for 1.25 trillion scf. This diversification in gas sources not only supports domestic energy needs but enhances the stability and reliability of overall production. As Nigeria continues to ramp up its gas output, the implications for both domestic and international markets could be profound, signaling potential shifts in energy geopolitics in the coming years.
