Why is PM Modi not going to Bangladesh for Tariq Rahman's swearing-in?
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not attend the swearing-in ceremony of Bangladesh's new Prime Minister Tariq Rahman, as he is engaged in the AI Impact Summit in India with French President Emmanuel Macron.
Today marks the formation of a new government in Bangladesh, with Tariq Rahman set to take the oath as Prime Minister. In this context, Rahman invited several global leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to the ceremony. However, Modi will not be attending, as he is preoccupied with other engagements, including participation in the AI Impact Summit in India. The Indian delegation will instead be represented by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
While Bangladesh is officially welcoming a new administration, India is simultaneously hosting an important summit focused on artificial intelligence. PM Modi inaugurated this significant event just yesterday and is also set to have discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron, who is visiting India. Their schedule includes a meeting in Mumbai this afternoon, wherein they plan to review the India-France Strategic Partnership.
PM Modi’s commitments today require his presence in Mumbai, where he will meet President Macron at 3:15 PM at the Lok Bhawan. Following their meeting, they will announce the India-France Year of Innovation 2026 at 5:15 PM, addressing stakeholders from both countries. This indicates the importance of bilateral relations and strategic discussions that are taking precedence over the ceremony in Bangladesh.
