No Gold Medals in Short Track? ... Three Opportunities Left in Women's 1500m and Men's and Women's Relays

South Korea's short track speed skating team has yet to win a gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics, with three events remaining: women's 1500m and men's and women's relays.

At the 2026 Winter Olympics, South Korea has not yet secured a gold medal in short track speed skating, a traditional stronghold for the nation. As of now, the team has won three medals total—one bronze in the men's 1000m and two medals in the men's 1500m (silver) and women's 1000m (bronze). Given that there are nine medals available in short track events, the absence of a gold medal is seen as a disappointment, especially with strong competition from teams like the Netherlands, who have already won four golds across various events.

Despite the current situation, South Korea's prospects look promising with three events still upcoming: the women's 1500m and both men's and women's relays. Key athletes such as Choi Min-jeong, who aims to become the first to win three consecutive Olympic golds in this event, and Kim Gil-ryeong, the current world number one in the 1500m, are both competitors to watch. Choi previously won gold at the Pyeongchang and Beijing Olympics, and Kim also displayed a strong performance in recent competitions leading up to the Olympics.

As the women’s 1500m finals approach, set for the early hours of the 21st, both Choi and Kim have expressed their readiness and determination to secure gold for South Korea. With strong historical performances and a deep talent pool, the expectation remains that these next races may turn the tide for the South Korean team in their quest for gold medals during these Winter Games.
