Ukrainian heating network workers must fight for the restoration of heating after Russian strikes

After recent Russian strikes on energy infrastructure, workers from Kyiv's heating and power company are engaged in repairing damaged pipelines to restore heating services.

Following a series of Russian strikes on critical energy infrastructure, workers from Kyiv's heating and electricity supply company, "Kyivteploenergo," are actively working to access and repair damaged sections of pipelines. This restoration effort is complicated by extremely cold weather conditions, making the task significantly more challenging. "Kyivteploenergo" oversees one of the largest and most complex heating networks in Europe, which serves approximately 300 multi-story residential buildings.

The head of the Heating Network Operations Department, Oleksandr Pilipishin, explained the technical difficulties faced. When the heating systems are halted due to strikes, their subsequent restoration involves complex hydraulic adjustments, pressure changes, and temperature fluctuations, which can lead to additional damage if not carefully managed. This means that the workers' efforts must address not only the immediate impact of the Russian attacks but also the potential vulnerabilities in the heating network that arise during the repair and restart process.

While the repair of specific pipelines is underway, the return of heating services is not guaranteed and will depend on the successful restoration of the thermal power plants that were also affected by the attacks. The ongoing situation highlights the challenges posed by the military conflict on essential public services in Ukraine and underscores the resilience required by workers in the energy sector to maintain necessary services during such crises.
