Avalanche Claims Lives of Skiers in Italy
An avalanche in Courmayeur, Italy, resulted in the deaths of two skiers and serious injuries to a third while they were skiing off-piste near the site of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
On Sunday morning in Courmayeur, a popular ski resort located in northern Italy, an avalanche struck an off-piste skiing route, leading to the tragic deaths of two skiers and critically injuring a third. The incident occurred in the "Col de Vesy" passage in the upper Val Veny area, which is situated on the Italian side of the Mont Blanc mountain range, close to the borders of France and Switzerland. The victims were skiing outside the designated slopes when they were caught by the snow mass, highlighting the dangers of such activities especially during severe weather conditions.
The Italian Alpine Rescue Service reported that a significant search and rescue operation commenced immediately after the avalanche, involving 15 rescue teams, three trained dog units, and two helicopters. Despite efforts to save the injured skier, who was transported to the hospital in critical condition, he later succumbed to his injuries. As of now, the identities of the deceased skiers have not been disclosed, further adding to the tragedy.
This incident coincides with particularly hazardous snow conditions in the Italian Alps, which have raised concerns among authorities. Just last week, the rescue services recorded over one avalanche a day, emphasizing the urgent need for safety measures and awareness among skiers and snowboarders. Given the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics in nearby Milan-Cortina, the accident serves as a critical reminder of the risks associated with winter sports in challenging environmental conditions.
