Group decries deplorable living conditions of Kano street kids
A NGO has raised alarms about the unsafe living conditions faced by over two million street children in Kano, Nigeria.
A Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) called the Global Improvement of Less Privileged Persons Initiative (GIOPPINI) has expressed grave concerns regarding the living conditions of over two million children living on the streets of Kano, Nigeria. The Executive Director, Mohammed Mashi, highlighted that these children are forced to sleep in unsafe and unhygienic environments, which expose them to various health risks every day. This alarming situation has been documented through comprehensive research and a scientific survey conducted by the organization, emphasizing the urgency for government intervention to address this issue.
Mashi noted that the street children inhabit various locations throughout Kano metropolis, including places such as Race Course, Central Hotel, Railway Station, Nassarawa Hospital Road, Dangi Bridge, Zoo Road, Ado Bayero Bridge (also known as Gadar Lado), New Road in Sabon Gari, Mariri, and Kofar Ruwa. The widespread presence of these vulnerable children raises significant concerns about their health, safety, and overall wellbeing in a city that is becoming increasingly urbanized yet failing to provide adequate support for its most vulnerable populations.
The report serves as a call to action for the government and relevant authorities to implement policies and programs aimed at improving the living conditions of these street children. Mashi's comments underscore the need for a collaborative approach involving social services, community organizations, and the government to create safe and supportive environments for these children, ensuring their rights and dignity are recognized and upheld in society.
