The Tourist Association in Conflict – Four Cabins Must Remain Closed

Four cabins of the Tourist Association in Hardangervidda will remain closed due to disputes with landowners regarding reindeer conservation efforts.

The ongoing conflict between the Tourist Association (DNT) and landowners in Hardangervidda has led to the closure of four popular cabins, impacting access to significant trails in the area. The DNT has made attempts to negotiate with landowners by offering to adjust opening hours and routes while awaiting a government action plan concerning wild reindeer in Hardangervidda. Unfortunately, these efforts have not succeeded, resulting in the necessary closure of the cabins Kalhovd, Stordalsbu, Lågaros, and Helberghytta.

Inger Lise Blyverket, the general secretary of the DNT, expressed disappointment over the closure and emphasized that the restrictions would limit access for many outdoor enthusiasts during the winter season. She noted that essential paths would not be marked, posing challenges for winter hikers hoping to visit the beautiful yet rugged landscapes of Hardangervidda. This development raises concerns about the impact of land-use conflicts on outdoor activities and conservation efforts in Norway’s national parks.

The dispute centers around differing viewpoints on the management of red-listed wild reindeer populations. The Hardangervidda wild reindeer committee has been pushing for specific measures to protect these vulnerable animals, complicating the relationship between recreational organizations and landowners. As this situation develops, it remains crucial to find a balance between conservation efforts and public access to Norway’s natural heritage.
