JV deputy requests evaluation of possible violations by 'OIK recuperators' lawyers
Deputy Jānis Patmalnieks has called for an investigation into the actions of lawyers associated with the organization 'Tiesiskums.lv' regarding potential violations of the Advocacy Law and Ethics Code.
Jānis Patmalnieks, a deputy from the political party Jaunā Vienotība (JV), has reached out to the Ethics Commission of the Latvian Bar Association and the Prosecutor's Office to investigate possible misconduct by lawyers from the organization 'Tiesiskums.lv'. He suspects that these lawyers may be systematically violating the Advocacy Law and the Ethical Code in connection with their campaign for the recovery of the mandatory procurement component (OIK). Patmalnieks is particularly concerned about the implications of their actions for public trust in the legal profession.
In his statement, Patmalnieks emphasized the importance of integrity in the legal profession, asserting that the current model, which allows the organization to act as a middleman in selling legal services, could breach professional standards. He expressed that this not only risks the integrity of the legal profession but could also lead ordinary citizens to fall into unfair contractual obligations, undermining their expectations of justice and lawful conduct. The portrayal of lawyers as intermediaries raises significant ethical questions about how legal services are accessed and for whom they are intended.
The deputy urged the relevant authorities to thoroughly examine the validity of the actions taken by these lawyers and the organization involved, reaffirming that lawyers should practice law either individually or collaboratively in firms. Such scrutiny is necessary to maintain accountability and trust in what is considered a profession built on the foundational values of ethics and lawfulness, especially in areas as sensitive as legal recoveries related to public interests.
