Latvian bobsleigh fans have named the Olympic sleds after a public vote, selecting 'Sprīdītis' for the two-man sled and 'Lāčplēsis' for the four-man sled.

Latvia's bobsleigh community has actively engaged in a naming contest for the national Olympic sleds, initiated by pilot Jēkabs Kalenda. Hundreds of fans contributed original name suggestions, with 'Namejs' for the two-man sled and 'Kurbads' for the four-man sled gaining particular traction, as well as regional names like 'Siguldas Lapsa' and 'Gaujas Vilks'. In a second round of voting, bobsleigh athletes selected their favorite names from the fan submissions, which led to a final selection by the supporters.

The votes culminated in the naming of the two-man sled as 'Sprīdītis' and the four-man sled as 'Lāčplēsis'. Both names are of cultural significance, with 'Sprīdītis' being a well-known figure in Latvian folklore. Designer Agnese Rancāne has created special visual designs for the sleds, showcasing the new names and contributing to their identity as they prepare for the Olympics. This initiative not only highlights the enthusiasm of the Latvian bobsleigh fans but also fosters a sense of community and pride in their athletes as they head into international competition.

With the names now officially assigned, the excitement builds within the Latvian sporting community as the team gears up for the Olympic Games. This endeavor reflects a broader trend in sports where fan engagement becomes a crucial element in team identity, and Latvia's bobsleigh team is embracing this unique approach as they aim for success in the upcoming competitions.
