Mitsotakis: Greece is making major strides in energy sector
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced significant progress in Greece's energy sector with the signing of concession contracts for hydrocarbon exploration by Chevron and Helleniq Energy.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has declared a significant step forward for Greece's energy sector following the signing of concession contracts for hydrocarbon exploration in four offshore areas, south of Crete and the Peloponnese. This joint venture between Chevron and Helleniq Energy is seen as a crucial development, marking Greece's commitment to tapping into its energy resources. The signing ceremony took place at the Maximos Mansion, emphasizing the government's strategic approach to enhancing the country's energy infrastructure.
Mitsotakis pointed out that these agreements follow an announcement made a few months prior regarding the country's plans for exploration in these regions. The designated areas for exploration encompass approximately 47,000 square kilometers, suggesting a substantial commitment to energy assessment through seismic surveys over the coming year. He highlighted the importance of hydrocarbons in Greece's energy strategy and emphasized the potential it has to position the country as an alternative energy hub, particularly in relation to providing resources other than Russian gas.
In his address, the Prime Minister noted the broader implications of these developments for Greece's energy independence and economic growth. By establishing a vertical corridor to transport hydrocarbons, Greece aims to reduce its dependence on external energy sources while also creating new opportunities within its energy market. This initiative reflects a forward-thinking approach to energy resource management that could bolster Greece's role in the European energy landscape as a competitive and reliable supplier.
