The Dukovany nuclear power plant has completed a two-month shutdown of its first unit, involving fuel replacement and equipment servicing.

The Dukovany nuclear power plant in Czechia has successfully concluded a planned two-month shutdown of its first production unit, which was essential for conducting fuel replacement and extensive equipment servicing. This operation was executed as per schedule, with the shutdown commencing on December 12 and finishing slightly ahead of the original timeline, according to plant spokesperson Jiří Bezděk. The controlled nuclear fission reaction was reignited over the weekend and electricity generation resumed early Monday morning.

Following the restart, the first turbine unit was reconnected to the power grid at 3:38 AM, followed by the second unit shortly after at 4:20 AM. Operators at the plant are progressively increasing the output of the unit while carrying out a series of mandatory inspections and tests. The unit is anticipated to reach full operational capacity by the end of the week, contributing significantly to the energy supply of Czechia.

During the shutdown period, workers performed over 18,000 tasks, highlighting the extensive nature of the maintenance involved. Among the most challenging tasks completed were the cleaning of the steam generator and the modernization of the control and safety systems of one of the three backup diesel generators. This comprehensive maintenance not only ensures the safety and reliability of the plant but also enhances its operational efficiency for the future.
