Next Level promotes cultural exchange with hip hop and jazz
The Next Level program by the U.S. Department of State culminated its cultural exchange activities in Mexico with an artistic performance combining hip hop and jazz.
The Next Level program, organized by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, recently concluded its cultural exchange activities in Mexico, featuring a dynamic live performance that highlighted the fusion of hip hop and jazz. This initiative involved workshops in Durango and Mexico City, culminating in a vibrant event filled with graffiti art, dance, and music that brought together American and Mexican artists. The performance served not only as entertainment but also as a medium for cultural diplomacy and artistic collaboration.
A notable highlight of the program was the collaboration between American hip hop artists and Mexican jazz musicians, who came together to create a unique musical piece. In preparation for the performance, they spent a day in the studio merging American hip hop rhythms with traditional Mexican instruments like the jarana jarocha and marimba, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of both musical traditions. This blend of styles emphasized the program's goal of fostering cultural appreciation through artistic expression.
Before the performance, a discussion was held featuring insights from the artists involved in the residency program, including U.S. Deputy Chief of Public Diplomacy Silvio González and jazz orchestra director Manuel Huizar. The event was hosted by the renowned MC and producer “Serko Fu,” who facilitated a dialogue around the transformative power of music in bridging cultural divides. The Next Level program not only promoted artistic exchange but also strengthened ties between the U.S. and Mexico through shared creative experiences.
