The water tank built at a cost of crores in Mahoba cracked as soon as it was filled

A water tank built in Mahoba, India, under the Jal Jeevan Mission cracked upon being filled for the first time due to poor construction materials, leading to complaints from locals.

In Mahoba district's Nagara Dang village, a water tank constructed under the Jal Jeevan Mission has faced structural failure on its first fill, quickly leaking and threatening to burst. The local villagers shared a video of the incident on social media, highlighting what they believe to be substandard materials used in the construction of the tank. The village head, Gayatri, has filed a written complaint with the district magistrate, calling for an investigation into the matter. This project, which was supposed to be completed by 2025, has faltered even before its official inauguration, leading to disappointment among the residents.

The reality of the situation came to light following a complaint by local MLA Brijbhushan Rajput, who had previously stalled the route of the state's water resources minister to complain about negligence in the 'Har Ghar Nal Yojana', a government initiative aimed at providing water supply to households. The leaking tank has validated the MLA's accusations, drawing attention to the discrepancies between governmental claims and the ground realities faced by locals. This incident adds to the growing discourse about accountability and standards in government projects.

Residents have begun referring to the tank as a 'white elephant', a costly structure that serves no purpose due to its apparent failure. The villagers, including Purana and Sushil, are expressing their frustration at what they perceive as the contractor's blatant disregard for construction standards during the project. As the news continues to circulate, it has raised questions over the quality of infrastructure being developed by the government and the need for greater oversight.
