Passenger seriously injured – The Swedish ferry turned back
A serious injury to an elderly Swedish female passenger caused the Silja Serenade ferry to return briefly to Sweden for a helicopter evacuation.
On a late Sunday evening, a serious incident occurred aboard the Silja Serenade ferry traveling between Finland and Sweden, where an elderly Swedish woman sustained severe injuries. The situation necessitated emergency evacuation by helicopter, highlighting the serious nature of the injury. Communication director Marika Nödj from Tallink Silja Oy shared that typically, ferry staff manage minor medical issues, but conditions requiring hospitalization necessitate transporting the patient off the vessel.
The incident not only affected the passenger's immediate needs but also impacted the ferry's schedule. As the ship turned back to meet the helicopter, this diversion caused delays. The ship resumed its journey only after ensuring the safe air transport of the injured passenger. Reports indicate that the ferry was expected to arrive in Helsinki approximately half an hour later than scheduled, with delays reaching up to 75 minutes at one point.
This incident serves as a reminder of the potential risks associated with maritime travel, particularly for elderly passengers who may require more robust medical attention. The quick response of the crew and coordination with emergency services is commendable and showcases the importance of preparedness in handling medical emergencies at sea.
