Warning for Snowmobilers โ€“ Do Not Do This Unless You Are One Hundred Percent Sure

Authorities warn snowmobilers to avoid venturing onto ice unless they are completely certain of its strength due to drowning risks.

The Finnish Traffic Safety Agency, Liikenneturva, has issued a warning to snowmobilers about the dangers of riding on ice-covered waters. They highlight that drowning is the most common cause of death in fatal snowmobiling accidents, urging people to only go on ice if they are completely confident in its load-bearing capacity. Ice conditions can change rapidly, making it crucial for riders to assess the situation thoroughly before proceeding.

Each year, Finland experiences between five and ten fatal snowmobiling accidents, a number that has remained relatively constant since the 2010s. The early months of the year are particularly perilous, coinciding with a peak in snowmobiling fatalities. Liikenneturva emphasizes the importance of safety and awareness, particularly regarding potential thinning ice or other hazards that may not be immediately visible.

Petri Niska, a liaison officer at Liikenneturva, reiterates that riders should be aware of their surroundings and avoid ice unless they can confidently assess its safety. They also recommend using safety gear, such as flotation devices, to improve safety while out on the snowmobile. These precautions are vital as the season progresses and more snowmobilers take to the ice, often unaware of the risks involved.
