Carnival Monday in Rio de Janeiro features Beatles block and rivalry between Cacique and Bafo da Onça
Carnival in Rio de Janeiro on Monday includes performances by themed blocks such as one dedicated to the Beatles and a historic rivalry between local carnival groups.
On Carnival Monday, February 16, Rio de Janeiro hosts 42 scheduled bloco parades across various neighborhoods, celebrating local music and culture. Notably, Sargento Pimenta, a Beatles-themed bloco, is expected to attract around 80,000 attendees, gathering at Flamengo Park before starting the procession at 10 AM. This year, the theme honors Brazilian singer Cássia Eller, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of her death in 2026.
In addition to Sargento Pimenta, other bloco events include Brasília Amarela, dedicated to the band Mamonas Assassinas, and Vem Cá Minha Flor, which will present a traditional parade with a band and fanfare. These vibrant celebrations highlight the diversity of Rio's Carnival music scene, showcasing both contemporary influences and traditional Brazilian rhythms.
Among the highlights of the day is the showdown between two of Rio's oldest blocos, Cacique de Ramos and Bafo da Onça, which will march separately at different locations. This rivalry is one of the most significant in the history of Rio's Carnival, illustrating the competition and camaraderie present in the festive atmosphere. As Carnival continues, it brings together local residents and tourists alike, celebrating the rich cultural tapestry of Brazil.
