Tragedy at an Italian Resort โ Two Men Killed in Avalanche, Third Fighting for His Life
An avalanche in a skiing resort in northwest Italy resulted in the deaths of two men, while a third remains critically injured.
On Sunday morning, three men were skiing at the Kurmajor ski resort in northwest Italy when they were caught by an avalanche, which was captured on film by other skiers. One man died at the scene while another succumbed to his injuries after being transported to the hospital. The third man, who sustained serious injuries, was moved to a hospital in Turin for further treatment. The identities and nationalities of the victims have not yet been released.
A rescue operation involved fifteen rescuers and three search dogs, utilizing two helicopters to coordinate the effort alongside two doctors. The area where the avalanche occurred was classified as having a level three avalanche hazard according to a scale of one to five. AINEVA, the association responsible for avalanche warnings, stated that "old, wind-drifted snow accumulations can break loose naturally or due to the passage of a winter sports enthusiast," highlighting the risks present in such environments.
In the current skiing season, the number of fatalities across Europe has already exceeded 60, raising concerns among authorities that this figure may continue to rise. The incident underscores the dangers associated with skiing in avalanche-prone areas, prompting calls for increased caution among winter sports enthusiasts in mountainous regions, particularly during high-risk conditions.
