Man is detained for harassment of workers at a support tent for women during the Carnival in São Paulo
A man was detained for allegedly harassing two workers at a women's support tent during a Carnival event in São Paulo.
During a Carnival block party in São Paulo on Sunday, a man was detained on suspicion of harassing two female employees who were providing support to women attending the festival. The tent, set up to assist women, was engaged in activities such as distributing stickers and temporary tattoos bearing the slogan 'No means no'. According to the Metropolitan Civil Guard, the man, who appeared to be intoxicated, approached the staff and made inappropriate requests which led them to feel offended and report the incident.
The attending staff called a nearby team from the Civil Guard, who responded, detained the man, and transported him to the local police station designated for women's cases, known as 1st Women's Police Station in the Cambuci neighborhood. However, reports indicate that the suspect was released shortly after his arrival at the station. The Public Security Secretariat announced that investigations are ongoing to clarify the incident and ensure accountability for the actions taken during the event.
This incident underscores the ongoing issues of harassment in public spaces, particularly during large gatherings such as Carnival, where support initiatives like the women's tent play a crucial role in safeguarding attendees. Authorities are taking steps to address such behaviors with the aim of fostering a safer environment in celebration spaces, though the quick release of suspects raises concerns about the enforcement of protections for women in these contexts.
