Petras Šiaučiūnas was hospitalized: 'I crushed my finger'

Lithuanian farmer Petras Šiaučiūnas suffered injuries after a barn roof collapsed while he was trying to clear snow to prevent a cave-in.

Petras Šiaučiūnas, a well-known farmer in Lithuania, recently experienced a frightening incident when he was attempting to clear snow from the roof of his barn, which was at risk of collapsing under the heavy weight. Despite receiving help, the roof unexpectedly caved in, fortunately without serious injury to his sheep. Šiaučiūnas shared the news on social media, raising concerns about the state of his farm and urging roles of awareness for others in similar situations.

On the evening following the collapse, Šiaučiūnas reported serious injuries to his finger, which he showed in a video as he was being transported in a wheelchair to seek medical attention. He recounted that an overhead beam fell on his finger while he and his helpers were trying to repair the barn. He described how, despite suffering a previous bout of paralysis in his legs that had improved, he now faced another daunting health challenge regarding the potential amputation of part of his injured finger.

The incident has raised discussions about farm safety, especially in extreme winter weather, and the need for adequate emergency measures and support for farmers engaging in potential hazardous work. Šiaučiūnas noted that while the barn may be damaged, all of his sheep were accounted for and unharmed, a small relief in light of the unfortunate circumstances he now faces.
