Samba schools in Batatais, Brazil, are competing for the 2026 carnival title, showcasing themes of ancestry and national identity.
Samba schools in Batatais, São Paulo, showcased their rich cultural heritage during the city's traditional carnival event on Saturday night. The Sambódromo “Carlos Henrique Cândido Alves” was filled with vibrant displays as four schools presented their unique themes in pursuit of the coveted carnival title for 2026. The festivities included a mix of historical narratives, humor, and, of course, energetic samba performances, reflecting the locals' love for this significant part of Brazilian culture.
Among the entrants, the Unidos do Morro kicked off the event with their theme 'Troco, Trambique e Tecnologia: Um País Chamado Brasil,' which took the audience on a journey through Brazil's monetary history, from bartering to modern digital transactions like PIX. Following them, the Acadêmicos do Samba paid tribute to ancestral Black mothers in their presentation, titled 'No Xirê das Yabás! Preto Velho cultua as mães negras ancestrais,' which emphasized important cultural references and the legacy of African roots in Brazilian society.
The voting results were eagerly anticipated, with the winner expected to parades again on Monday, ensuring a festive atmosphere continued in Batatais. These performances highlight not only the competitive spirit of the schools but also the importance of recognizing and celebrating Brazil's diverse and historical cultural tapestry during one of the most significant events in the Brazilian calendar.
