Carnival 2026: Civil police in costumes, drones and PM cameras helped arrest over 30 crime suspects in SP
During the Carnival festivities in São Paulo, over 30 suspects were arrested with the help of disguised civil police, drones, and real-time monitoring cameras.
During the recent Carnival celebrations in São Paulo, the local police carried out Operation Carnaval, resulting in the arrest of 33 individuals suspected of various crimes, including theft and robbery of mobile phones. This operation, running from January 31 to February 14, showcased innovative policing tactics, such as officers donning costumes to blend in with carnival-goers, coupled with the use of drones and other monitoring technology.
Among the highlights of the operation was the clever use of costume-wearing police to catch thieves in the act. For instance, officers disguised as characters from the popular cartoon Scooby-Doo apprehended three suspects who were stealing mobile phones from festival attendees in one of the city's vibrant carnival blocks. This unique approach not only aided in crime prevention but also ensured a more engaging presence of the police at the festive events.
The Secretary of Public Security (SSP) of the state emphasized the importance of such operational strategies in maintaining public safety during large gatherings. The arrests not only targeted active criminal actions but also included individuals wanted by the justice system for previous offenses. The operation reflects a broader commitment to enhancing safety during major public festivities, highlighting the collaboration between technology and innovative policing methods to create a secure environment for all participants.
