Polish truck 'rescue operation' near Panevėžys lasted 2 days: traffic on the highway was stopped 3 times
A heavy truck transporting cars overturned near Panevėžys, leading to complicated rescue operations that halted traffic multiple times over two days.
A truck en route to Vilnius, carrying light vehicles, veered off the road and overturned into a ditch on Friday around 1 PM. Traffic on the highway was immediately halted for approximately two hours, but due to adverse weather conditions and the weight of the cargo, the recovery efforts were postponed until Saturday morning. The conditions made it difficult to retrieve the overturned truck on the same day, necessitating a continuation of operations under challenging circumstances.
On Saturday morning, a new accident occurred involving the recovery team from 'Automera', a roadside assistance company, when another truck, a Mercedes, collided with their service vehicle as it was approaching the recovery site. This collision sent their SUV tumbling into the ditch as well. Despite the initial efforts to clear the road and rescue the vehicles, they faced additional challenges and were unable to recover the first truck that day, causing another traffic halt lasting one to two hours on February 13.
It wasn't until Sunday afternoon that the recovery operation was successful, involving the use of a tow truck and other heavy equipment to finally lift the overturned truck out of the ditch. The operation required the joint efforts of representatives from two roadside assistance companies, highlighting the complexities and difficulties involved in such rescue missions, especially under adverse weather conditions.
