Calacalí-La Independencia Road Reopened After Landslide
The Calacalí-La Independencia road has been fully reopened to traffic after a landslide caused by heavy rains, according to the Pichincha Prefecture in Ecuador.
The Calacalí-La Independencia road, also known as the Mitad del Mundo-Río Blanco route, is now completely open for vehicular circulation following a significant landslide that occurred at kilometer 36 due to heavy rainfall. The Pichincha Prefecture announced the reopening on Sunday, February 15, after crews worked for over 13 hours to clear the blockage. The temporary closure had forced authorities to recommend using an alternative route, the Alóag-Unión del Toachi road, for those traveling to the Costa region.
Prior to the road's reopening, traffic congestion was reported on the Alóag-Santo Domingo route, particularly during the busy Carnival holiday weekend. The Prefecture highlighted the urgency of maintaining traffic flow and has provided a provisional detour at kilometer 36 to facilitate movement in both directions. This situation underscores the impact of adverse weather on infrastructure in the region and the ongoing challenges faced by local authorities in managing road safety and accessibility.
The quick response by the Pichincha Prefecture and the deployment of heavy machinery demonstrate the agency's commitment to restoring essential travel routes for residents and visitors alike. As Ecuador approaches its peak travel seasons, ensuring the reliability of major roads becomes crucial for the economy and tourism industry, particularly during events that draw travelers to popular destinations.
