Yasuji Inagaki elected as the first mayor of Machida City, backed by the Liberal Democratic Party, boosted by the House of Representatives election
Yasuji Inagaki, an independent newcomer endorsed by the Liberal Democratic Party, has won the mayoral election in Machida City, Tokyo.
In the mayoral elections held on the 15th in Machida City, Tokyo, Yasuji Inagaki, a 50-year-old independent candidate and doctor, has achieved victory with the endorsement of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). He beat out competitors including former Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly member Takahiro Okusawa and former city council chairman Hidetaka Kimeda, who were also running as independents. The voter turnout was 47.26%, a significant increase from the previous election's 42.51%. Inagaki's victory follows the recent success of another LDP newcomer in the House of Representatives election, highlighting the potential influence of national politics in local elections.
Inagaki is the third generation to run a long-established otolaryngology clinic in Machida, benefiting from a strong local reputation and political connections through his family, which has historically engaged in local political affairs. His campaign focused on integrating health, education, and community vitality, promising comprehensive reforms for the city. The support from LDP members and local assembly members was crucial in garnering his victory. Notably, outgoing mayor Joichi Ishisaka's endorsement also played a significant role in boosting Inagaki's legitimacy as a candidate.
Other candidates, including Okusawa, who pushed for infrastructure proposals like a stadium and arena, and Kimeda, who advocated for private investment around Machida Station, could not gain enough traction despite their platforms. The election results reflect a continuing trend of strong support for the LDP at both national and local levels, suggesting that upcoming elections may further consolidate this political alignment in Machida City and potentially influence future policies and governance in the area.
