Operator shoots woman and then kills himself in Goiás
A forklift operator in Goiás shot and killed his ex-wife before taking his own life, despite a protective order against him for domestic violence.
In a tragic incident in Itumbiara, Goiás, 46-year-old Pedro da Costa Queiroz fatally shot his ex-wife, 39-year-old Elieser Teodoro da Silva, before committing suicide. This event occurred on Saturday afternoon and is under investigation by the Civil Police. The relationship between the two was tumultuous, marked by previous allegations and a conviction for domestic violence in 2024. As a result of these past actions, Elieser had been granted a protective order against Pedro just a week before the murder, on February 6, following claims of threats and damage.
Despite the judicial protective measures in place, both individuals were still residing together, indicating severe flaws in the enforcement of the legal orders meant to provide safety. According to Itumbiara's police chief Felipe Sala, the attack escalated, with Pedro also assaulting the victim's daughter and stepdaughter, with the latter requiring medical attention but being declared out of danger. She has been identified as a crucial witness to the events that preceded the violence.
This incident underscores ongoing issues within domestic relationships where protective measures fail to prevent further violence, raising questions about the effectiveness of the judicial system in safeguarding vulnerable individuals. The tragedy casts light on the broader issue of domestic violence in Brazil, inspiring discussions on better protection for victims and the need for deeper societal change regarding such persistent and devastating conflicts in relationships.
