Carnival Raises Alert for Drugging Drinks; Learn How to Protect Yourself from the Scam

The Scientific Police of Mato Grosso do Sul issued a warning about the risks of substances used to drug individuals during Carnival, particularly in alcoholic beverages.

As Carnival approaches, the Scientific Police of Mato Grosso do Sul have raised concerns regarding the malicious use of substances known colloquially as "Boa Noite, Cinderela" to incapacitate individuals by drugging their drinks. The police highlighted that this issue is particularly pressing during Carnival when there is increased alcohol consumption and large gatherings at public and private events.

Experts, including criminal expert Evandro Rodrigo Pedon, have identified these substances as typically sedatives and central nervous system depressants, such as benzodiazepines, which can be administered without the knowledge of the victim. The effects of these drugs can result in intense drowsiness, mental confusion, memory loss, and decreased reaction abilities, leaving individuals vulnerable to various forms of crime, including sexual assault and theft.

The warning serves as an essential reminder for party-goers to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings, particularly during festive periods like Carnival when the risk increases. The police have urged individuals to take precautions, such as monitoring their drinks and being cautious about accepting beverages from strangers, to protect themselves against potential drugging and resulting exploitation during this celebratory but risky time.
