LIVE: Leaders of the Latvian biathlon team start in good positions for the Olympic pursuit
Latvian biathletes Bendika and Volfa are set to start the Olympic pursuit race in strong positions based on their recent sprint results.
In the upcoming 10km pursuit race, Latvian biathletes Laura Bendika and Līga Volfa will be starting with promising placements after their performances in Saturday's sprint event. Bendika finished 15th and Volfa 16th, and they will start 1:23 and 1:27 minutes behind Norway's leader Marena Kirkeide, respectively. The race will require them to complete four shooting rounds, which could significantly impact their final standings.
Bendika has had an impressive showing in skiing at previous Olympic events but has struggled with shooting accuracy, which has prevented her from contesting for the top spots. Conversely, 20-year-old debutant Volfa has made a notable entry into the elite of women's biathlon, achieving 36th and 16th places in individual competitions. Both athletes are well-positioned to qualify for the mass start event, demonstrating the depth of talent in the Latvian biathlon team.
The previous pursuit races saw men's competitors, with the Latvian team's leader Andrejs Rastorgujevs finishing in 29th place. This contextualizes the pressures and challenges that the Latvian athletes face, particularly as they strive for success on the Olympic stage. Their performances not only reflect personal aspirations but also the growing prominence of Latvian biathlon on the international scene.
