Kallas calls on Europe to "regain its will"
European Union foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas emphasized the need for Europe to strengthen itself in light of Russian aggression, highlighting defense needs starting with Ukraine.
During a press conference at the Munich Security Conference, Kaja Kallas, the European Union's foreign affairs chief, stated that Europe must strengthen itself militarily as Russia continues its aggressive policies. She emphasized that the EU member states want the bloc to be more powerful and to act with clear determination against threats. Kallas pointed out that the restoration of 'European will' is urgent, particularly in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, as the outcome of the war will significantly shape Europe’s defensive posture.
Kallas also expressed concerns over Russian actions intended to destabilize Europe through sabotage, cyber attacks, and threats related to energy and nuclear capabilities. She indicated that these threats require a cohesive European strategy that considers not just military readiness, but also economic fortification in response to geopolitical challenges. Kallas has been working alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to develop a new security strategy that addresses these multifaceted issues.
Her comments reflect a larger sentiment within the EU regarding the necessity for collective defense mechanisms and the importance of a united front against external threats. As Europe grapples with various security challenges posed by Russia, Kallas's push for stronger defense measures highlights the growing urgency for the EU to adapt and enhance its military capabilities to ensure stability and peace within its borders.
