Kallas has revealed possible EU requirements for Russia in peace talks with Ukraine
Kaja Kallas, the EU's chief foreign affairs representative, outlined potential demands from the EU that Russia would need to agree to in peace negotiations with Ukraine.
Kaja Kallas, the European Union's high representative for foreign affairs, has sent a document to EU member states detailing the requirements that Brussels believes Russia should agree to during negotiations with Ukraine. The outlined demands include reducing and withdrawing troops from Georgia and other neighboring countries, making reparations, and democratizing Russian society. This information was revealed by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, which had access to the document.
Despite significant contributions from the EU towards Ukrainian assistance, neither the EU nor individual European countries have participated in the negotiations that have been ongoing for nearly a year in various forms to end Russia's war against Ukraine. European leaders have expressed their regret over their lack of political influence in these discussions, particularly as the US has outlined a 20-point peace plan that includes clear competencies from Brussels, such as Ukraine's EU membership by 2027.
The document distributed by Kallas is designated as "Fundamental European Interests for a Comprehensive, Just, and Lasting Peace and Continent." It emphasizes the importance of addressing key strategic interests in order to facilitate meaningful negotiations and lasting peace in the region. This initiative reflects the EU's commitment to play a more active role in shaping the future of peace discussions surrounding the conflict in Ukraine and reinforces their position on the necessity of cooperation among EU nations and allies in addressing regional security concerns.
